Much awaited new matterial from the darling of the cut-up crowd Secret Mommy and, for the first time, material from the band fronted by Secret Mommy instigator Andy Dixon, "Winning".
Secret Mommy presents his new work, a departure from the found-sound montage of his first record with Powershovel, this time he works with a more traditional source in the form of studio recorded instruments. In fact, in the artist's own words, 'No synthesizers, drum machines, or any other non-organic or electrified instrument were used in the creation of this album'.
The result, however, is far from conventional having spent a year at the hands of Andy being manipulated into a sound very much his own. The result is without doubt his best work to date, a compelling, full fledged big band on a roller-coaster.
Winning present a simple emotional sound reminiscent of Cap'n Jazz, Hella and Lightening Bolt.
Two CDs of totally different, yet intimately connected music.
今回のテーマはそのアルバムタイトルの通り「演奏」。すべての音は完全にアコースティックな素材を使って作られた、エレクトロニックミュージック。 彼の周りに集まるミュージシャン達と録音を重ね、その後1年がかりで編集をして作られた。ヴァイオリン、チェロ、ブラスなど、これまで使われなかった生楽 器が楽曲に豊かさを加えられた、これまでの彼の作品の中でも一番の音楽的な作品。今回はあえて、シンセサイザーやドラムマシンなど、いっさいの電子楽器は使 用しないという徹底っぷりが彼らしいが、もちろんこれまでの彼のアルバムどおり、利密なまでのエディットとリズムは健在。ただしそこにはこれまで以上に生 楽器の温かみが入っている。このアルバムは昨年になくなった彼のお母さんに捧げられている。ボーカル曲も数曲フューチャーされているが、それは本作の２枚 目にあたる、彼の新しいバンド、"Winning"のデビューアルバムにつながる。Winning は彼をボーカルにして、ギター、ドラムのとてもシンプルな編成ながら、かなり屈折したエモーショナルな演奏を聞かせる。パンク/ハードコアのようなスト レートな演奏かと思いきや、急にインプロビゼーションが始まり、破綻するギリギリのところでボーカルやメロディーがつなぎとめる。共に全く違う音楽性に感 じるが、Andy Dixonの手がけるデザインを見ると、そういうバランス感覚を感じて納得をすることになる。
